ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Sense the system

2 weeks of on-site research at JK Papers Ltd. We studied the system's overall operation, conducted user research with all of the stakeholders, and then analysed the data to develop design solutions for the organization's improvement while keeping the company's vision in mind. The goal was to understand the system in such a way that we not only learn the system, but we sense it.

Objective of the Research: To understand the system & find opportunities for its betterment

This portfolio projects contains only the process of working because the collected data was confidential.

Joining the pieces

Connecting our findings & analysis to the goal of the project & the company's vision

Data Collection

Formalities first

We started with collecting all the formal documents, meeting the employees formally & the formal industry tour

Doing Formal Interactions

Formal meetings, understanding the working of the plant, department visits

Industry tour

In order to avoid bias, we had the basic industry tour after we had a clear understanding of the plant ourselves.

Human interactions

After the formal meets, we started getting to know the people there better, We visited the plant everyday & made connections. The human perspective data came from those informal interactions, We tried to collect these aspects of the human:

Informal visits

We divided areas on the map of the plant to visit & paid visits to each area.. Then we conducted Group discussions for sharing our insights

To gain as many insights as we could and to challenge our preconceptions, we continued to conduct Colony visits and invite ourselves to people's homes for supper.

Fitting in

While we collected a lot of data, some people still considered us auditors or outsiders and wouldn't open up to us. We figured we needed to become one of them to get a good sense of the system.

Simply observing

This trip sharpened our observation skills on a deep level. We were on our observation duty 24*7
which gave us very useful insights for research.

Data Analysis & Representation

Data Analysis

Along with data collection, we began data analysis and developed original methods for data analysis and representation. Since it helped us understand the information better, we physically represented the data. We covered the area in papers and it started looking like a murder investigation.

The following information was physically represented, but I created digital copies of some data for easier understanding and to protect confidential information.

Recollection

Finding the missing points

We discovered several gaps in our data at this point after gathering and analysing a lot of data. We therefore had covering those missing points & further observations on the schedule for the next days.

Joining the pieces

Balance between empathy & goals

The next stage in advancing our project was to link our conclusions and research to the project's goal. Many insights were refocused, altered, and sometimes deleted in order to be in line with the project's objectives.

Throughout our research, we came across a number of individuals with whom we identified and whose plight broke our hearts, but a designer's responsibility is to remain focused and keep their objectives in mind. An effective product is produced when empathy and objectives are balanced correctly.

My design journey was greatly impacted by this trip, which helped me realise a lot of things and the scope for improvement. I became a better person as a result, being more open and curious. We had fun!
